Department of Mathematics & Statistics Calendar Week of December 3 - 9, 2007 Monday, December 3, 2007 1:30 PM MATH 126 Instructors Meeting 459 MSc 4:00 PM MATH 295H Presentation 400/210 MSc Dr. Craig L. ZIRBEL, BGSU "Sound, Pitch, Fourier Series, Music, and MP3 Files" ABSTRACT: Our perception of sound arises from pressure variations in the air next to our ears. These variations can be produced by sending an electronic signal to a stereo speaker. Sending a sinusoidal signal will produce a pure tone. Changing the frequency will change the pitch. Adding multiple sinusoidal signals will produce chords and more complicated sounds. The techniques of Fourier series allow us to decompose a sound into a sum of sinusoidal signals, and this allows us to modify the sound to remove "noise" or change the tone, like the bass and treble knobs on a stereo do. Digital audio formats like compact discs and mp3 files represent different ways of discretizing and storing these musical signals, and this will be explained briefly.
