Math 112 and Math 122 replace Math 120, College Algebra

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will no longer offer Math 120, College Algebra, after Fall semester, 2003. Math 120 is being replaced by a sequence of two courses, Math 112, College Algebra I (3
hours) and Math 122, College Algebra II (3 hours). These new courses will be available starting in the Fall semester 2003.  Two sections of Math 120 are being offered in the Fall of 2003 on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Syllabus for Math 112
  • Syllabus for Math 122
  • Placement, prerequisites, and tracks to calculus

The introduction of these courses changes the routes that students take through college algebra and precalculus.  It has required changes in the way the math placement test results are coded.  At the same time, the registration system has been modified to prevent students from registering for courses above their mathematics placement.  These topics and more are covered in the links below.

Details for current or former Math 120 students

Details for current Math 095 students

Students who earn a grade of A, B, or C in Math 095 are recommended to register for Math 112 next. Exceptional students who wish to accelerate their program by skipping over Math 112 and taking Math 122 next must obtain a recommendation from their current Math 095 instructor.

For students who placed into Math 095 or Math 120 but have not yet taken a math course

This is relevant for people who took the math placement examination before May 8, 2003.  If you took the mathematics placement examination after June 1, 2002, your placement exam has been re-scored and a revised placement code has been entered on the SIS system for you.  Contact your college adviser or call the Mathematics Department at 419 372-2636 to ask what your placement is.  Some students whose old placement was Math 120 will now be placed into Math 122, while others will be placed into Math 112.  Some students whose old placement was Math 095 will now be placed into Math 112, some into Math 095.

    For incoming BGSU students

Incoming students will take a mathematics placement exam, as usual. Those with weak backgrounds and a low placement score will be placed into Math 112 and will have to take Math 122 as well in order to complete the equivalent of Math 120. Those with a strong background and a good placement score can take just Math 122 to complete the equivalent of Math 120. Registration for Math 122 will be strictly enforced based on placement recommendations.
